Militants holed up in mosque free civilians

SRINAGAR, FEB. 8. Two militants holed up today in a village mosque in Kupwara district of Jammu and Kashmir freed four civilians, including the Imam of the shrine, who sought to negotiate their surrender, after keeping them hostage for several hours even as the face-off between the ultras and the security forces continued.

The 10-hour siege of the mosque took a dramatic turn when the ultras held hostage the four-member civilian

team, sent by the authorities with an appeal to surrender, official sources said.

Shujaat Bukhari reports from Jammu:

Today's incident comes barely days after two militants, holed up in a mosque near Sopore, surrendered before the Baramulla district magistrate. Two or three militants might be holed up in the mosque. And one person, it is believed, died in the crossfire between the militants and the security forces, who have laid a cordon around the mosque.

Reports said a party of the Rashtriya Rifles, probably on a tip-off, reached Tootigund (Kulangam) around 8.30 a.m. On seeing the security personnel, the militants took shelter in the mosque.

The ultras, according to the DIG, north Kashmir range, Mohammad Amin Shah, opened fire and the security forces retaliated. In the ensuing melee, one person died ``after a heart attack.''
