Efforts on to make `good sense' prevail
SOMEWHERE IN THE WEST. SECT., FEB. 8. India today said efforts were being made to see that ``good sense'' prevailed in Pakistan and it met New Delhi's demands to end cross-border terrorism and hand over 20 terrorists and criminals.
The Defence Minister, George Fernandes, who visited forward locations in this sector, said that Pakistan continued to be ``involved in encouraging'' terrorism despite being a prominent member of the international coalition against terrorism and there was ``a world of difference'' between the words and deeds of the Pakistan President, Pervez Musharraf.
Asked how much time India was ready to give Pakistan to meet its demands, he refused to specify but said ``efforts are being made to see that good sense prevails in Pakistan and the wide gulf that exists between words and actions is bridged. How much time that takes is for Pakistan to decide. The time may come when someone else will have to decide that.''
He emphasised that deployment of Indian troops along the border with Pakistan would not end till Islamabad agreed to New Delhi's demands of ending cross-border terrorism, stopping infiltration and handing over the 20 terrorists.
Report `misleading'
Mr. Fernandes today charged the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) with giving a ``deliberately misleading'' report on the purchase of caskets for Kargil victims.
He also attacked his adversaries on the issue, saying they ``need to call me names to justify themselves. By your saying I am corrupt, I don't become corrupt.''
