Innings win for Baroda
By Our Special Correspondent
BARODA, FEB 8, Baroda went in for the kill without Zaheer Khan, the India pace bowler allowed to take a break by the team management for battles ahead, needing just 12.1 overs on Friday to finish off Hyderabad's resistance in the Ranji Trophy quarterfinal.
The defending champions bowled out Hyderabad for 127 in the second innings before lunch on day four, winning by an innings and 256 runs for a place in the semifinals.
Baroda employed a two-pronged pace attack, the bustling Rakesh Patel and nippy Shekhar Joshi attempting to dislodge left-hander Vishnu Vardhan, the overnight batsman, by bowling an aggressive line, but without success. At the other end V. V. S. Laxman was his usual unflappable self, letting bowlers expend their energy in trivial pursuits like pressuring a batsman of his class with short stuff.
The first four overs produced no alarms for the batsmen on a wicket on which the ball lifted on the fourth morning, Vardhan watchful and Laxman shaping up to build an innings even though defeat was inevitable. Finally, Baroda skipper Jacob Martin turned to spinner Ajit Bhoite, who struck in the fifth over by foxing Vardan.
Baroda's hurry to seal victory cost it seven runs off one ball, skipper Martin kicking a ball beyond the ropes to deny Laxman the strike, but was penalised for his intentional action (a boundary plus three runs taken by the batsmen).
