Sumit, Maria win titles

NEW DELHI, FEB. 8. Sumit Gupta won his second successive title in the ITF South and Central Asian under-14 tennis championship which concluded at the DLTA Complex here on Friday. Sumit outplayed compatriot Jeevan Nedunchezian 6-4, 6-1.

In the girls section top-seeded Maria Vasilyeva of Kazakhstan was equally emphatic in winning her second successive singles title, at the expense of Sandhya Nagaraj.

The results:

Boys (final): Sumit Gupta bt Jeevan Nedunchezian 6-4, 6-1; Third place: Franklyn Emmanuel (Sri) bt Umarov Jamol (Uzb) 2-6, 6-1, 6-3. Doubles (final): Franklyn Emmanuel and N. S. Nishendran (Sri) bt Tejasvi Rao and Arnav Jain 6-2, 6-3.

Most promising player: Arnav Jain; Fairplay award: Jeevan Nedunchezian.

Girls (final): Maria Vasilyeva (Kaz) bt Sandhya Nagaraj 6-4, 6-3; Third place: Amena Rakheem (Kaz) bt Madura Ranganathan 6-4, 6-1. Doubles: Yekaterina Morozova and Amena Rakheem (Kaz) bt Madura Ranganathan and Vandana Murali 4-6, 6-2, 6-3.

Most promising player: Amena Rakheem (Kaz); Fairplay award: Evgeniya Kim (Uzb).
