Australia lifts junior World Cup

CHRISTCHURCH, FEB. 9. Australia added to its big haul of World cricket trophies when it beat South Africa by seven wickets in the final of the under-19 World Cup at Bert Sutcliffe Oval on Saturday.

An unbeaten 100 (103b, 11 x 4) by opening batsman Jarrad Burke carried Australia to victory with almost five overs to spare as it reached 209 for three in reply to South Africa's 206 for nine.

Australia holds the senior World Cup and a host of other titles in Test and limited-overs cricket. Its junior players did not lose during the 16-team tournament.

Aaron Bird took four for 47 from 10 overs as the most successful of Australia's bowlers, containing South Africa which faced its full complement of 50 overs. Left-arm spinner Xavier Doherty, who was Australia's best bowler throughout the tournament, took two for 26 from 10 accurate overs.

South Africa was in early trouble when it lost wickets at 17 and 45. It recovered to 85 for three but its next four wickets fell for only 18 runs, stripping its middle order and leaving it 103 for six.

The last three wickets produced 103 runs as the South Africans staged a small recovery around the unbeaten half century of Zwelibanzi Homani (52, 76b). Earlier, Greg Smith made 51 from 90 balls and captain Hashim Amla 29 from 34 balls.

Burke's outstanding innings ensured Australia was never in danger of failing to match South Africa's total. Shaun Marsh made 45, Craig Simmons 34 and captain Cameron White 22 as Australia easily paced its response.

The scores (final): South Africa 206 for nine in 50 overs (Zwelibanzi Homeni 52 not out, Greg Smith 51, Hashim Amla 29; Aaron Bird four for 47) lost to Australia 209 for three in 45.1 overs (Jarrad Burke 100 not out, Shaun Marsh 45, Craig Simmons 34).
