NEW DELHI, FEB. 9. Dilbagh Singh surprised defending champion Bhagya Rajan in clinching the welterweight gold in the 48th National boxing championship which concluded at the YMCA Complex here on Saturday.

In a hard fought bout, the crafty Bhagya Rajan paid for taking too long to gauge his hungry opponent. The policeman, Dilbagh got off to a 4-1 start and edged ahead after being 7-6 at the end of the second round.

The Services pugilist, Bhagya Rajan could not bridge the gap which kept expanding, as he tended to stoop in trying to avoid the punches of his opponent, and invariably made it easier for the rival to land the punches on target.

It was the third gold for Railways, but the host could not challenge Services for the team championship. Services wound up with 57 points and five gold medals. Railways finished a distant second with 41 points.

In an unprecedented move, two were selected as the `best boxers' of the championship. The practice of declaring the `best loser' and the `most promising' boxers were discontinued. Diwakar Prasad and Som Bahadur Pun won the honours.
