India completes rout

BEIRUT, FEB. 10. Harsh Mankad of India defeated Karim Alayli 6-3, 6-1, leading his team to a 5-0 triumph over host Lebanon on Sunday in their Davis Cup Asia-Oceania Zone Group 1 competition.

In the first reverse singles match of the day, Leander Paes (No. 1) of India, leading 3-1 after the first two days of competition, defeated Lebanon's Patrick Shukri 6-2, 6-2.

India's Harsh Mankad later defeated Karim Alayli of Lebanon 6-3, 6-1. With the results of Sunday's singles matches rendered a foregone conclusion, the games were played on an abbreviated best-of-three set basis.

It was clear from the first day that Lebanon's players were no match for India's players - veterans of international tournaments.

India's victory over Lebanon qualifies the Indian team to play New Zealand, which beat Indonesia in a zonal tie on Sunday.
