Sena, BJP doing well
By Mahesh Vijapurkar
MUMBAI
Feb. 11.
Early trends to ten major civic corporations, including Mumbai and Thane, indicate that the saffron parties, the Shiv Sena and the Bharatiya Janata Party, are doing well, with strong prospects of retaining their grip over these bodies.
In other places such as Akola, Nagpur and Solapur, it is still a toss-up but the Sena is giving the others a run for their money. The Congress(I), despite its refusal to form tie-ups with the NCP, has done, going by early trends, poorly.
Three things seem to tilt the preference towards the Sena _ BJP though upsets are still possible. Firstly, the inability to keep secular votes together. Secondly, excessive squabbling between the Congress(I) and the NCP to the extent no party thinks that it can form post-poll tie-ups in civic bodies and thirdly, scandalous accusations of Congress(I) leaders, including Govindrao Adik, MPCC(I) chief.
The cities that went to polls are Mumbai, Thane, Solapur, Pune, Nagpur, Nashik, Akola, Amravati, Ulhasnagar and Pimpri-Chinchwad. Pune and its Pimpri-Chinchwad.
