'Dangerous liaison'
By Our Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI, FEB. 11. The Congress and the CPI(M) today accused the BJP of conniving with the VHP on the Ram temple issue.

``With defeat staring them in the face, the BJP has resorted to the temple issue out of desperation,'' the Congress spokesperson, Jaipal Reddy, said in a statement.

The CPI(M) politburo charged the Government with ``providing patronage to the VHP in its dangerous game''. Because of the connivance and the patronage extended by the Government the VHP was able to play such a dangerous game, the politburo said in its statement. It also asked the Government to act firmly and immediately to check any ``disruptive'' activity by the ``RSS-VHP regime''. The Congress referred to the RSS connection between the different saffron organisations to drive home its point about the VHP and the BJP acting in tandem. ``The RSS is the common thread, this doublespeak should be understood as a classic case of orchestrated obfuscation,'' Mr. Reddy said.
