BJP softens stand towards VHP

NEW DELHI, FEB. 11. Softening his stand towards the VHP on the Ram temple issue, the BJP president, K. Jana Krishnamurthy, has said the VHP can prepare the electorate to vote for a party which will bring forth a legislation to facilitate the shrine's construction as the BJP, despite having championed this cause, is now constrained by the NDA agenda.

Mr. Krishnamurthy, who had earlier warned the VHP against violating the court's orders, said he thereby meant only ``legal consequences and not executive action''.

``Besides contesting the legal action, the VHP can go to the people and say that matters of faith cannot be decided by court. They can cite a precedent. The Muslims did not accept the Supreme Court verdict in the Shah Bano case and at that time, Congress had brought in a legislation to change that verdict,'' Mr. Krishnamurthy said in an interview in the latest issue of the RSS mouthpiece Panchajanya.

``The VHP can mould public opinion in such a way that people themselves will vote for a party which will bring forth a legislation for the construction of the Ram temple. It is the heart-felt desire of majority of the Hindus that the Ram temple be built at Ayodhya,'' he said.

He, however, said that while the BJP had launched an agitation for the temple ``in the present situation, we are bound by the NDA agenda''.
