Letters to the Editor
Sir, Recently the press published a report on Veda conferences and the award of mementos to scholars. In none of these reports is there any mention of a decent salary to Vedic teachers, who are the `adhyapakas' to Vedic students, to attract them to the teaching profession. All these teachers resort to priesthood as it provides a good income. Even employed persons have turned `purohits' without acquiring the necessary background knowledge. It must be the endeavour of Vedic organisations such as the Maharshi Sandipani Rashtriya Veda Vidya Pratishtan, Ujjain, a wing of the Human Resource Development Ministry, to offer a decent scale of pay to Vedic teachers. Schools teaching Vedas along with other subjects should be encouraged to maintain the Veda `adhyayanam' for future generations. Only then will Hinduism stand rooted in the study of the Vedas. Money spent on unproductive purposes such as conferences and construction of buildings is only an outward show, similar to the bursting of crackers on Deepavali. Practical steps are the need of the hour to preserve the Vedas. Will the HRD Minister take steps in this direction?
N.V. Vasudevachariar,
