CHENNAI, FEB. 13. An engineering college student died after he fell from an MTC bus near Selaiyur this evening. The police said Premnath (18), a second year student of a self-financing engineering college at Selaiyur, travelled by the bus on route number 51-A (Agaram to Tambaram and fleet number TAS 93). The student was hanging on to the handle on the footboard and around 4 p.m., the bus was nearing the Selaiyur stop. But even before it came to a halt, the victim attempted to alight and fell down. He was caught under the rear wheel and died on the spot. The driver, N.Karunanidhi, was arrested. Local people said the particular route bus was always crowded as it operated fewer trips in a day than earlier. Moreover, the bus was running packed during the peak hour both in the morning and evening, and many college and even school students had to travel on the foot board, the residents pointed out. Youth killed In another accident on the GST Road at Kadapperi near Tambaram, two youths who were riding a two-wheeler were hit by a a van. While the rider died, the pillion rider was injured and admitted to hospital on Tuesday. The victim, Deepan Rai (19), an engineering college student, was heading towards the city with his friend, Narendran (19). At Kadapperi, the two-wheeler was hit by a van coming in the opposite direction. Both were taken to the Government Hospital, Chromepet, where Deepan Rai succumbed to injuries.
