Bengal's Shubhamoy Das, who made a compact 82, lifts Railways' Parida to the fence watched by Sanjay Bangar and wicketkeeper Abhay Sharma in the Ranji Trophy semifinals in New Delhi on Saturday.
NEW DELHI, FEB. 16. Railways dominated the penultimate day of the Ranji Trophy semifinal against Bengal by establishing a first-innings lead of 232 runs deciding not to enforce the follow-on at the Karnail Singh Stadium here on Saturday. Resuming at 166 for five, Bengal groped for a while but gave up once the overnight partnership between the talented Shubhamoy Das and Sanjib Sanyal was broken by left-arm spinner Murali Kartik, who bowled exceedingly well in this match but failed to impress the National selectors. There was little chance of Railways allowing Bengal any escape route but the young Das gave a good account of his potential by holding firm in the company of Sanyal. The stand was the first real piece of resistance from Bengal which failed on all fronts in this match. The performance by Das stood out even as Railways increased the pressure with every hour. ``He's a compact batsman,'' said Sourav Ganguly of Das, who displayed a wide range of shots and excellent temperament. But, in sight of this third successive century, he lost his cool and spooned a catch to mid- on. It was a shot against the character of his batting style but then Das had faced the attack competently in his 201-ball innings which contained eleven 4s. Sanyal was the first to get out for a well-made 59 with eight 4s. A 62-run stand between Utpal Chatterjee and Das was Bengal's best phase of the day before the veteran left-arm spinner lost his concentration. When Das nicked the ball to slips it was a matter of time. Railways duly took the lead and decided not to enforce the follow-on. With the pitch still good to bat on, the pair of Sanjay Bangar and Amit Pagnis increased Bengal's agony with a partnership of 124 runs. Bangar hit a 144-ball half century which contained six 4s and two 6s before edging to short-leg. Pagnis, batting with lot of confidence, helped himself to an impressive unbeaten 59 off 134 balls with five 4s. Bengal pressed hard with six bowlers even as Ganguly decided to stay off the field. lThe scores: Railways - 1st innings: 557.
