Opinion - Letters to the Editor

Ban Shiv Sena

Sir, — In the wake of the unfortunate incidents which took place in Lucknow on Valentine's Day, I request the Government to ban the Shiv Sena. The beating of young boys and even girls, who met to celebrate this day of love, by rogue Shiv Sena activists was really shameful. I would like to ask them that if, according to them, Indian culture does not permit any celebration of love, how can it permit the beating of girls; there were reports of incidents in which the activists tried to tear the clothes of girls too!I don't understand why the public is turning a deaf ear to and condoning such practices, as I foresee the start of a new Taliban in the country. This fanaticism (religious, cultural, etc.) may force intellectuals either to leave the country or to arm themselves so as to cleanse the society of such elements. After all, this is the land where both Mahatma Gandhi and Chandrashekhar Azad were born.

Ajeet Singh,

Kanpur
