South African Charl Schwartzel, who won the Eveready all-India amateur golf championship in Kolkata on Sunday.
KOLKATA, FEB. 17. It was far more easier than expected for the South African Charl Schwartzel in winning the National amateur champion of India title at the Royal Calcutta Golf Club course here on Sunday. The 18-year-old lad from Johannesburg, hoping to turn a professional in near future, gave a near flawless display of driving and putting to win the 36-hole final of the Eveready 101st all-India amateur golf championship match play beating India's Manav Das by an overwhelming margin of 11 & 9 ending the lopsided contest on the 27th hole itself. Manav Das from Ambala began strongly. He, like his opponent, birdied the first hole. Schwartzel birdied the second and Das the third. The contest ended there for all practical purposes. A string of birdies by the South African on the 5th, 6th, 8th, 9th and 10th holes in a row meant Das wilted under pressure. The Indian one under after the first nine holes crumbled to bogey on the 8th, 10th, 11th, 14th, 16th and 18th to give the South African No. 2 a huge lead of 10 up after the first round. The second round began with a birdie on the 19th by Schwartzel. Das reduced the lead at the 20th with a par 3. After a bogey on the 21st, Das won the 22nd and it appeared the Indian got back his touch. The South African, however, recovered to win the next two holes. With a massive lead against him, Das finally conceded the match at the 27th hole. Schwartzel's triumph meant the South African team retained both the stroke and match play that they had won last year at Mumbai. Mr. B.M. Khaitan, the patron of the RCGC, gave away the trophies.
