Railways' Raja Ali, who scored an unbeaten century, lifts Bengal's Utpal Chatterjee to the boundary watched by wicketkeeper Deep Dasgupta in the Ranji Trophy semifinals in New Delhi on Sunday.
NEW DELHI, FEB. 17. It was mockery of first-class cricket at the Karnail Singh Stadium as Railways continued to bat and shut Bengal out. The first- innings lead had ensured Railways a place in the Ranji Trophy final against Baroda but the manner in which the day's play progressed left a sour taste. Railways middle-order batsman Raja Ali would certainly disagree since he compiled an unbeaten century even as overnight opener Amit Pagnis missed his hundred by two runs. Railways might have wanted to give its batsmen an opportunity to boost their averages but in that case skipper Abhay Sharma should have concentrated on a long innings in the middle to regain his form which had been awful thus far. The Railways team management obviously was not willing to look ahead but then having made it to the final was reason enough to grind the Bengal attack to dust. Indian skipper Sourav Ganguly did not come to the ground and it did not matter if he stayed in the hotel room or flew to Kolkata to spend time with his family before reporting at Nagpur on Monday to prepare for the first Test against Zimbabwe. Sanjay Bangar too had to rush to Mumbai to collect his kit before proceeding to Nagpur. Wicketkeeper Deep Dasgupta did not enjoy such luxury and spent the day behind the stumps. His preparation had begun here itself. Former Test skipper Bishan Singh Bedi was critical at the attitude of the both the teams and rightly too. Railways really `killed' the game on the final day by continuing to bat, an exercise which drove the spectators away. The 145-ball essay by Raja (nine 4s and three 6s) and 238-ball knock by Pagnis (six 4s) showed the strokemaking abilities of the two left-handers and their form. The final, a repeat of last year, will be played at the same venue from March 6. The scores: Railways-1st innings: 557. Bengal-1st innings: 325. Railways-2nd innings: Sanjay Bangar c Chakravarty b Chatterjee 62, Amit Pagnis c Chatterjee b Lahiri 98, Tejinder Pal Singh c Chatterjee b Lahiri 33, Yere Goud (not out) 61, Raja Ali (not out) 100, Extras (b-2, lb-3, nb-8, w-13) 26, Total (for three wkts.) 380. Fall of wickets: 1-124, 2-175, 3-236. Bengal bowling: Shabir Ali 16-4-47-0, L. R. Shukla 17-5-41-0, Sourashish Lahiri 17-5-107-2, Sanjib Sanyal 4-0-23-0, Rohan Gavaskar 20-2-70-0, Utpal Chatterjee 35-3-87-1.
