A sleight of hand

Sir, — In North American parlance, `thimble rig' is a game where three thimbles are shuffled with a pea underneath and the observer has to guess which thimble has the pea under it. In Saigon and the Far East it is played with coconut shells and a seed and is called a shell game. The BJP, the VHP and the NDA Government constitute the three thimbles and the Ayodhya Temple reconstruction is the object.

To common citizens, the manoeuvering of the Ayodhya issue among all the three shells indicates a skilful sleight of hand that attempts to confuse the whole problem. It is sad that the Government is unwilling to send out strong signals to the self-appointed religious ``representatives'' of the Hindus that no breach of law will be permitted at any cost. Instead it is a willing partner in the game.

Mushtaqh Ali,
Chennai
