A vote for misuse of power: Vaiko

By Our Staff Reporter

COIMBATORE FEB. 24. Even as the CPI(M) and the Congress Jananayaga Peravai congratulated the AIADMK general secretary, Jayalalithaa, on her victory in the Andipatti bypolls, the MDMK has termed the outcome ``a vote for more misuse of power''.

The MDMK general secretary, Vaiko, told presspersons here today that ``it is painful to note that it has been a vote for more misuse of power. It is not good for the State''.

He alleged that there had been an unbridled display of money and muscle power during the campaign, besides the abuse of ``official power''.

``Though I accept the democratic verdict given by the people of Andipatti, I must say that the bypoll proved how much power could be misused. In the history of elections in Tamil Nadu this has been an unprecedented misuse of power as also money and muscle power to ensure the victory of a ruling party candidate in a byelection''.

He said from the beginning the Election Commission guidelines were violated. ``Even after the EC notified the elections, development works were carried out and for 20 days all the Ministers camped at Andipatti to carry out the campaign''.

When pointed out that the MDMK has got less votes in Andipatti compared to the Assembly elections in May 2001, he said the AIADMK had specifically targeted the MDMK bases in the constituency with ``attractive assurances'' even from Ms. Jayalalithaa that the constituency would get the best attention with regard to development.

In sharp contrast to Mr. Vaiko's reaction, the CJP founder-leader, P. Chidambaram, and the CPI(M) State secretary, N. Varadarajan, congratulated Ms. Jayalalithaa on the victory.

While Mr. Varadarajan refused to comment on the alleged malpractice in the run up to the polling in Andipatti, he called upon Ms. Jayalalithaa to keep her promise to the voters.

Referring to reports that there may be a change in the style of administration, Mr. Chidambaram hoped it would be clean and efficient.

Our Chennai Special Correspondent reports:

The general secretary of the State BJP, L. Ganesan, congratulated Ms. Jayalalithaa on her victory and greeted her on her birthday.

In his message, the DK general secretary, K. Veeramani, described the AIADMK chief as a leader who had overcome Himalayan challenges with courage and continued to serve the poor with compassion.

Leaders of several other parties, organisations and associations of teachers as well as government employees conveyed their greetings to Ms. Jayalalithaa.
