The three Independents whose names were displayed on the top three places in the second unit of EVM were lucky as they had gained highest number of votes among Independents. Many voters, who were tutored by political parties to press one of the top three buttons in the EVM, had inadvertently pressed buttons in the second unit. While Paulraj, displayed first in the second unit, gained 894 votes, Pushparaj, placed next to him, obtained 287 votes, and P. Periya Subbian got 860 votes. In the first unit, the top three places were allotted to the DMK candidate, Vaigai Sekar, the MDMK candidate, V. Jayachandran, and the AIADMK candidate, Jayalalithaa.
