Vallejo maintains clean slate

LINARES, FEB. 27. Francisco Vallejo of Spain put up a valiant defence against leader Michael Adams as he earned his fourth draw to remain undefeated in the 19th City of Linares Chess Tournament being played here at Hotel Anibal on Tuesday.

Adams maintained his lead with two points from three games as the tournament saw three draws for the second day in succession. Alexei Shirov, Francisco Vallejo (both Spain) are also on two points but from four games.

In the fourth spot are Viswanathan Anand, Garry Kasparov (Rus), Ruslan Ponomariov (Ukr) with 1.5 points from three games, while Vassily Ivanchuk (Ukr) also has 1.5 points but from four games.

The results (fourth round): Vassily Ivanchuk (Ukr) 1.5 drew with Garry Kasparov (Rus) 1.5, Michael Adams (Eng) 2 drew with Francisco Vallejo (ESP) 2, Ruslan Ponomariov (Ukr) 1.5 drew with Alexei Shirov (ESP) 2.

The pairings for Thursday's fifth round: Vallejo vs Ponomariov, Kasparov vs Adams, Anand vs Ivanchuk, Shirov - bye.
