GURGAON, FEB. 27. It was vintage Vinod Kambli on display at the Nehru Stadium here on Wednesday. He smashed the Central Zone bowlers at will in his unbeaten 56 and helped West Zone earn five points, in its last league match of the Deodhar Trophy cricket tournament. Chasing a meagre target of 130 after Central Zone was shot out in 32.3 overs, West made a decent start to set the stage for Kambli to aim and get the bonus point that took the its points tally to 13. Alas, in the end, even that bonus point was not enough to get the trophy for West as South, playing at the Palam ground in Delhi, some 20km away, was scripting its own success story. Reprieved, when he was on eight, by Mohammed Kaif off Rahul Kanwat, Kambli went after the Central bowling in typical fashion. He chose Kaif for special punishment and once whacked him for two successive fours to the mid-wicket region. Kambli completed his half century with a boundary off Kaif as West raced towards the target. Another Kambli boundary, off Kaif again, brought West the victory. Kambli remained unbeaten on 56 after facing 74 balls. He hit seven boundaries and a six. For the bonus point, West Zone needed to win inside 40 overs and it accomplished the task in 32.5 overs. Central Zone, ahead of both West and South, going into the last set of matches, remained on 10 points to occupy the third slot in the league table. Central's undoing was its batting. Electing to bat, Central sent Amay Khurasiya and Gagan Khoda to open instead of the tested pair of Jyoti Yadav and Khoda.
