South clinches Deodhar Trophy
By Our Sports Reporter

NEW DELHI, FEB. 27. South Zone emerged as the best one-day team clinching the Deodhar Trophy with 14 points from four encounters, one more than West, at the Palam Ground here on Wednesday.

After posting a modest 223, South needed to restrict North within 179 runs. It was achieved by a margin of three runs.

Going into its last league match, South had nine points and its target was a victory with a bonus point - to avoid sharing the trophy with West.

North's miserable performance continued and it almost gifted South the bonus point. Chasing 224, North lost an early wicket of in-form Munish Sharma (9). But Gautam Gambhir and Yuveraj Singh did well to negotiate the South Zone pace bowlers, Venkatesh Prasad and L. Balaji.

But four run outs took the match away from the host. Gambhir was out for 24, after adding 39 for the second wicket with Yuveraj. He was caught by Suresh Kumar off Bhardwaj and that was when North's downfall started.

Yuveraj followed soon when he was run out after making 24. Sangram Singh went in the same manner as North lost three wickets in a space of two runs.

South's task was made simpler as West completed its win three hours before the scheduled end. As North crumbled under pressure, South tightened the noose and reduced North to 92 for six in the 28th over. Wicket-keeper batsman Ajay Ratra and Ashish Nehra then got into the act of salvaging the innings and added 44 for the seventh wicket.
