HASSAN FEB. 28. The State Government will request the Centre for additional funds to tackle the shortage of drinking water in the State expected with the onset of summer, the Revenue Minister, H.C. Srikantaiah (in picture), has said. He told presspersons here today that the Chief Minister, S.M. Krishna, had directed him to approach the Centre in this regard and put forward the State's request. Noting that the time for the meeting had not been fixed, Mr. Srikantaiah said that he, along with the Revenue Commissioner, would call on the Union Finance and Agriculture ministers and apprise them of the situation. The problem was acute in 11 districts, including Chikmagalur, and Mr. Krishna had already directed the respective deputy commissioners to take necessary action, he said. Asserting that the State Government would provide adequate funds to tackle any scarcity of drinking water, he added that the Government would also seek the help of MPs from the State in placing its case before the Centre for more funds. Earlier, presiding over the meeting in connection with the Hoysala Utsav to be held from March 9 to 12, Mr. Srikantaiah said efforts were on to invite the Governor and the Chief Minister for the closing and inaugural functions, depending on their convenience. He directed the officials to bring out a souvenir befitting the occasion. The meeting was informed that the Department of Tourism would provide Rs. 5 lakh for the utsav, while the Department of Kannada and Culture would provide Rs. 50,000.
