Shankaracharya demands ban on VHP

NEW DELHI MARCH 1. The Shankaracharya of Goverdhanpuri, Jagadguru Aadhokshjanand Teerth, today condemned the ongoing mob violence in Gujarat as ``state terrorism'' and demanded a ban on the VHP and the arrest of its leaders and activists under the National Security Act.

Alleging that the mob attacks all over Gujarat on minorities and properties were carried out ``with direct assistance of the VHP office bearers and police'', the seer said it was nothing short of ``state terrorism.'' ``For the sake of unity and communal harmony and to save the Hindu religion from further degeneration, the VHP should be banned, like the SIMI, and their so-called leaders and activists should be arrested forthwith under the National Security Act,'' the Shankaracharya said in a statement here.

Reacting to the statement, the VHP's senior vice- president said ``Goverdhanpuri is no mutt and Aadhokshjanand is no Shankaracharya.''
