NEW DELHI, MARCH 1. Disturbed over the communal flare-up in Gujarat and alleged police inaction in preventing violence, the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) today issued suo motu notice to the State Chief Secretary and the DGP on the steps taken to tackle the situation. The NHRC, headed by the Chairperson, J.S. Verma, at its meeting expressed anguish over media reports on the escalating violence and took notice of an e-mail seeking the its intervention. Taking suo motu cognisance of these reports, the commission decided to step in immediately to prevent any negligence in the protection of human rights of the people irrespective of their religion. In view of the urgency of the matter, the commission felt it would not be appropriate to stay its hand till the veracity of the reports had been established and it was necessary to proceed immediately assuming them to be prima facie correct. Hence, it issued notice to the State Chief Secretary and the DGP for their reply within three days indicating the measures being taken.
