U.S. conveys condolences

NEW DELHI, MARCH 1. The United States has condemned the communal violence in India and has conveyed its condolences to the families of the victims, the people and the Government of India.

``We condemn the violence that has claimed so many innocent lives,'' a State Department official told The Hindu and added that the understanding was that the violence had not spread beyond Gujarat.
