Deshmukh inducts RPI-BM nominee into Cabinet

By Mahesh Vijapurkar

MUMBAI MARCH 2. The Maharashtra Chief Minister, Vilasrao Deshmukh, today strengthened his party's alliance with the RPI-Bahujan Mahasangh led by Prakash Ambedkar by inducting one of its three MLAs, Dashrath Bhande, into the coalition Cabinet.

At the same time, another small outfit, Peasants and Workers' Party with five MLAs but two Ministers in the Government, mulled possible withdrawal from the coalition.

The PWP was irked that its base in Raigad district was eroding as the major partners in the Government, the Congress and the NCP, were not playing ball in the local bodies there.

It is significant that these moves are made when the Shiv Sena-BJP would be seeking to destabilise the Government in the wake of their own gains in the local bodies when the legislature meets for the budget session later this month.

Dr. Bhande comes into the Government in place of Makhram Pawar, a long-time associate of Mr. Ambedkar, who refused to quit the Government at the latter's behest and later joined the Congress.
