SPF stakes claim to form ministry in Manipur

By Our Correspondent

IMPHAL MARCH 2. The leader of the newly-formed Secular Progressive Front (SPF), Okram Ibobi, has formally staked his claim to form the next ministry in Manipur. Mr. Ibobi, along with three other leaders, today called on the Governor, Ved Prakash Marwah.

Indications are that after meeting leaders of other political parties, Mr. Marwah is likely to invite Mr. Ibobi to form the ministry on Monday.

The Congress had secured 20 seats, the Manipur State Congress Party (MSCP) 7, the CPI 5 and the NCP 3. Mr. Ibobi also furnished the list of his 35 supporters.

Meanwhile, SPF leaders have made it known that they are in no hurry to admit other parties .since it will mean sacrificing more ministerial berths.

In the 60-Member House, the 36 MLAs of the SPF could easily form a stable Ministry.

As such, the leaders have told the MLAs of the Federal Party of Manipur, who number 13, and two MLAs of the Democratic Revolutionary People's Party to wait and sit in the Opposition Bench for at least six months.
