Presiding over a seminar on "New communication technologies and their implications on communication education," organised under the auspices of the Department of Mass Communication and Journalism, Karnatak University, here today, Mr. Arjun Dev cited the instances of the havoc wrought if social responsibility was given a go-by in reporting. Mechanical reporting caused great harm, he said. Mr. Arjun Dev said that experience in the media should be made mandatory for appointing people to teach journalism. Journalism teachers should be sent to the media organisations periodically to keep themselves abreast with the latest happenings. Delivering the key-note address, Srinivas Melkote, Professor, Department of Mass Communications, Bowling Green State University, Ohio, U.S.A., called for a debate on the cultural, social, and political implications of the changes brought about by the new communication technologies. Dr. Melkote said that the departments of mass communication in universities should offer media literacy classes and involve the stake-holders in framing the education policy.
