Laloo demands convening of NIC

By K. Balchand

PATNA MARCH 2. The Rashtriya Janata Dal president, Laloo Prasad Yadav, today criticised the failure of the Gujarat Government and the Centre to contain the violence that followed the train-burning incident in Godhra and demanded an emergency meeting of the National Integration Council.

Mr. Yadav said the Prime Minister, A.B. Vajpayee, and the Union Home Minister, L.K. Advani, were no less responsible for the deterioration in the situation. He accused the Gujarat Chief Minister, Narendra Modi, of `adding fuel to fire' by his `provocative' statements and not putting down the riots with an iron hand.

He alleged that the Government had `deliberately delayed' action and given the anti-social elements a free hand to wreak havoc.

Mr. Yadav demanded that all top VHP leaders, including its president, Ashok Singhal, be arrested under the POTO. Mr. Yadav, who had a talk with the Prime Minister and the Home Minister, on Friday also called for sending home all the `kar sevaks' with due protection.
