Manipur, Nagaland peaceful

By Our Correspondent

IMPHAL MARCH 2. The communal carnage sweeping some States has not had any impact in Manipur and Nagaland. There was no response to the nationwide general strike called by the Vishwa Hindu Parishad on Friday. Muslims are seen moving freely in Hindu-dominated areas. Students and Government employees are also going about their business are usual.

Manipur was hit by communal violence last in May 1992. Over 100 Muslims were massacred on a single day. But complete normality was restored the next day. Some insurgents had been cheated by a Muslim gun-runner and they had engineered the riot by spreading rumours. Insurgents of other established outfits intervened. The leader of the new outfit was shot dead.

The VHP and other fundamentalist elements are not making their presence felt in the State as they are aware of reprisals by insurgents.
