KUDITINI VILLAGE (Bellary Dt.), MARCH 2. The Chief Minister, S. M. Krishna, has warned of stringent action against those who try to spoil communal harmony in the State. At a function in which the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha and AICC President, Sonia Gandhi, launched the work on the Bellary Thermal Power Station here today, Mr. Krishna said the country, where communal harmony was respected, was passing through a difficult situation with violence breaking out in some regions. ``We will ensure that religious and communal harmony is maintained in the State,'' he said. He urged the people to recall the sacrifices made by several leaders and follow their ideals to ensure communal harmony. He appealed to them to shun hatred and develop love for other religions and languages without giving scope for any friction. Power cut likely Referring to the situation of the power sector in the State, Mr. Krishna hinted that power cut would be imposed in the State during the summer. This was mainly because the reservoirs were not full owing to the failure of the monsoon. Explaining the steps being taken, Mr. Krishna said that apart from the Bellary project, there was also the 290-MW Alamatti Power Generation Unit, which would be commissioned by the month-end. ``At a time when the disinvestment concept is being implemented in full swing, the State Government's decision to make a big investment of Rs. 2,000 crores for generating power indicates that it still has faith in the public sector,'' he said. Mr. Krishna said the Government had mobilised infrastructure for both the projects. ``Except getting clearance from the Central Electricity Authority, the Government has made all arrangements,'' he said. It was hoped that the clearance, which was only a formality, would be obtained soon. He said that in addition to these projects, the Jindal Power Company, which had been supplying 100 MW of power to the Karnataka Power Transmission Corporation Limited, would set up two more units to generate another 250 MW of electricity. He said the State would take a leap in the power sector in 2002. More funds sought Presiding over the function, Allum Veerbhadrappa, MLA and KPCC President, thanked Ms. Gandhi and Mr. Krishna for the special package for the development of the district. He urged them to continue the support and allocate more funds for development works. He urged Ms. Gandhi to contest from Bellary in the next elections and ensure the development of Bellary District. Protest against Kondaiah Even as Ms. Sonia Gandhi was about to conclude her speech, a woman Congress worker shouted slogans against K. C. Kondaiah, MP. Ambika Jalgar, who is from Hospet, succeeded in drawing the attention of Ms. Gandhi to her protest. Ms. Gandhi, who came down from the dais and waved towards the crowd, asked Ms. Jalgar to meet her later. The ministers, Mallikarjun Kharge, M. Y. Ghorpade, H. K. Patil, Veerkumar Patil, and M. Diwakar Babu, and Kolur Basavanagouda, M.P., were prominent among those present. Jyotiramlingam, Managing Director, Karnataka Power Corporation Limited, welcomed the gathering. Explaining the project, he said it would be completed in 36 months.
