BJP gives Modi a clean chit
By Our Special Correspondent
NEW DELHI, MARCH 2. The Bharatiya Janata Party today defended the Gujarat Government saying it was doing all that it could to contain communal violence in the State. It appealed to the major opposition parties not to ``fish in troubled waters.''
In the backdrop of the Narendra Modi Government coming under attack for ``inaction'' and ``connivance'' with those indulging in riots, the BJP Central office-bearers met here to take stock of the situation and examine the appeal made by the leaders of all major political parties along with the Prime Minister, Atal Behari Vajpayee, and the Leader of the Opposition, Sonia Gandhi, for peace in Gujarat. The meeting noted the manner in which the representatives of the Congress, the Left and the Samajwadi Party ``exploited the most unfortunate incidents in the country for their own petty political purposes''
The BJP chief, Jana Krishnamurthi, maintained the Gujarat Government was exerting its utmost to curb violence. It had sought the help of the Army. And when the situation demanded that the Government's hands in its efforts to restore normality be strengthened, it was strange that the Congress and the SP spokespersons should make ``baseless allegations,'' the BJP general secretary, Sunil Shastri, said.
