Soumyadeep, Mouma reign supreme
By Ritesh Gupta

NEW DELHI, MARCH 2. Top-seeded Soumyadeep Roy avenged a defeat and, in the process, retained the men's singles title in the National table tennis championships at the NDMC Indoor Stadium here on Saturday.

The 19-year old Soumyadeep, who struggled with his form throughout the championships, finally touched his wonted form on the right occasion. The loss in the team championship final was avenged as the PSCB star overcame Sourav Chakraborty in the men's final, at 17-19, 11-4, 11-7, 11-8, 11-8.

There was a flurry of winners from Soumyadeep's racquet as he asserted his superiority against the star Railway player who had made such a fine impression just the other day.

In the women's final, Mouma Das also triumphed for the second time as she defeated Mantu Ghosh 11-4, 11-8, 11-5, 11-8 in 26 minutes.

Soumyadeep received Rs. 1,00,000. The 17-year old Sourav, who failed to cap his exceptional display, received Rs. 60,000.

Considering the way Sourav had performed on his way to the final, a better fare was expected from the youngster. But as Sourav looked a little overawed by the occasion, Soumyadeep came up with an improved display.

For Soumyadeep, who became the youngest National champion when he won the title last year in Cuttack, a lot more was at stake when he took on Sourav in the final. If Sourav had triumphed, he would have not only snatched the National title but would have ended up replacing Soumyadeep as the youngest winner.

Despite under pressure to perform, Soumyadeep remained focussed. ``My only aim was to defend the title. I am happy with my performance,' said Soumyadeep.

Soumyadeep, who lost the first game after saving six game points, benefited from his aggressive instincts. As his return of serves improved considerably, Soumyadeep got room to execute his powerful drives.

Sourav, yet to win a title in the senior section, failed to curb Soumyadeep's fluent stroking. Once Soumyadeep took the third game by managing two winners from 8-6, he never looked back. Soumyadeep, who never trailed in the last two games, converted his third match point.
