FOOTBALL: JERUSALEM: The violence and bloodshed in the Middle East was put aside on Friday to celebrate the unprecedented feat of an Israeli soccer club advancing to the quarterfinals of the UEFA Cup. Israeli newspapers heavily featured Hapoel Tel-Aviv's surprising and historic 2-1 win against Parma in Italy on Thursday night. Hapoel's victory over its much favoured Italian opponent - Parma won the UEFA Cup in 1995 and 1999 - marked the first time an Israeli team had progressed so far in an European soccer tournament.

MILAN: AC Milan prevailed in a dramatic penalty shootout on Thursday to reach the quarterfinals of the UEFA Cup, while eliminating Dutch opponent Roda. Romanian defender Cosmin Contra converted the decisive penalty, which gave the home team a 3-2 edge over the Dutch team in the shootout at San Siro stadium. One player down from the 85th, Roda defended a 1-0 advantage in the second-leg, which evened a 1-0 loss suffered at home two weeks ago. Penalties were kicked after two extra times left Roda leading 1-0 on a 71st minute goal by defender Mark Luijpers.

UEFA Cup fourth round: Second leg results: Parma (Italy) 1, Hapoel Tel Aviv (Israel) 2 (Hapoel advances 2- 1); Feyenoord (Netherlands) 3, Glasgow Rangers (Scotland) 2 (Feyenoord advances 4-3); AEK Athens (Greece) 2, Inter Milan (Italy) 2 (Inter Milan advances 5-3); Borussia Dortmund (Germany) 0, Lille (France) 0 (aggregate 1-1, Dortmund advances on away goals); Slovan Liberec (Czech Republic) 4, Lyon (France) 1 (Liberec advances 5-2); AC Milan (Italy) 0, Roda Kerkrade (Netherlands) 1 (aggregate 1-1, Milan wins 3-2 on penalties); Leeds United (England) 0, PSV Eindhoven (Netherlands) 1 (PSV advances 1-0); Servette (Switzerland) 2, Valencia (Spain) 2 (Valencia advances 5-2).

GOLF: MIAMI: Scores after Friday's second round of the $ 4.7 million Genuity Championship golf tournament at the par-72, 6,484-meter (7,125 yard) course at the Doral Golf Resort and Spa. Ernie Els 66-67-133; Briny Baird 69- 66-135; Rich Beem 69-68-137; Skip Kendall 67-70-137; Tiger Woods 67-70-137; Justin Leonard 67-70-137; Peter Lonard 70-67-137; Pat Perez 69-69-138; Steve Elkington 67-71-138; Ian Leggatt 71- 67-138.

TENNIS: NEW YORK: Pete Sampras is switching coaches for the second time in three months. The owner of a record 13 Grand Slam singles titles is going from Tom Gullikson to Jose Higueras, who'll also stay on as the head coach of men's tennis for the U.S. Tennis Association. ``I'm looking at this as a long- term relationship with Jose. But there are no magic potions out there - it is up to me to execute and produce and play good tennis,'' Sampras said. His choice of Higueras comes at least in part with an eye on the French Open, the only major tournament he hasn't won. Higueras reached the semifinals at Roland Garros in 1982-83, and coached Michael Chang, the 1989 French Open champion, and Jim Courier, who won the clay Grand Slam event in 1991-92.
