MPs made to wait
By Our Special Correspondent
AHMEDABAD, MARCH 2. Four members of Parliament, including two Hindi film personalities, were made to cool their heels by the Ahmedabad police for hours, before being allowed to visit the riot-torn areas in the city.
Ms. Shabana Azmi, Mr. Raj Babbar, Mr. Sitaram Yechuri and Mr. Amar Singh, had landed here last evening to visit some of the affected areas. But their pleas to the City Police Commissioner for curfew passes yielded no results.
They had to return to their hotels disappointed. Finally, this afternoon they were issued the necessary documents and provided with a police escort to visit the areas they wanted to see.
While Ms. Azmi had claimed that the police were refusing them permission to visit the affected areas on the ground that it could `instigate' more violence, a police spokesman said the problem was meeting their demand for adequate police security. The police could ill-afford security to the visitors when every policeman was out on the streets to quell violence.
A police inspector, however, finally took the four MPs to Naroda, Meghaninagar and some other affected areas and on her return, Ms. Azmi said the situation in the city ``looked more horrible'' than what they had imagined.
