Paramashivaiah Committee recommendations in Budget?

By Our Staff Correspondent

HASSAN MARCH 3. The State Government is likely to take a decision on the inclusion of the recommendations of the Paramashivaiah Committee on diverting the West-flowing rivers to provide drinking water to drought-prone districts of the State in the coming State Budget, G.Puttaswamy Gowda, Hassan MP, said at Holenarsipura on Sunday.

He told presspersons that the Chief Minister, S.M.Krishna, had taken the project seriously, and was likely to include it in the Budget. The Government would also consider the doubt that the project would violate the provisions of the Cauvery Tribunal.

Referring to Railway budget, Mr. Gowda expressed anguish at the continued neglect of projects related to the State, especially gauge conversion between Hassan and Mangalore and the new railway line between Hassan and Bangalore, via Shravanabelagola. The Rs. 45-crore allocation for the Hassan-Mangalore project would not help speed up its implementation.

Stating that the MPs from the State had collectively pressured the Railway Ministry for the fast implementation of railway projects in the State, he said the Centre was promoting regional imbalance by favouring only the States ruled by the constituents of the NDA. The Railway Budget had shown deficit despite increasing the fares.

On the violence in Gujarat, Mr. Gowda said the Government of that State had shown lack of character in managing the situation. Blaming it for the violence, he said there was no place for communal disturbances in a democracy.

He expressed displeasure with the local officials for the lethargy in taking steps to mitigate the problems in drinking water supply in Kankatte hobli of Arsikere taluk. They were yet to submit a report on the fluoride content in groundwater in various parts of the taluk.

Later, Mr. Gowda inaugurated the modernisation programme of the Sriramadevara north and south irrigation canals. The project has received administrative sanction for Rs. 33 crore of which Rs. 12 crore will be spent this year. The Superintending Engineer of Hemavathi Irrigation Project, Biradar, the Executive Engineer, Devappaiah, and A.Dodde Gowda, MlA, were present.
