The Governor, V.S.Rama Devi, said vested interests had misled the people, causing the carnage. The Government alone could not control the situation, and society should play a positive role in restoring normality. Sara Abubakar, noted writer, who received the Attimabbe Dana Chintamani Prize from Ms. Rama Devi, said society should not consider all the Muslims as terrorists because of the actions of a few misguided elements. Communalism posed the greatest threat to the existence of the man. No religion in the world preached hatred and violence. Those who indulged in terrorism deserved to be condemned, she added. Ms. Rama Devi said women should be given reservation in all fields, and noted that the reservation for them in local bodies had led to revolutionary changes. She suggested that excavation be continued at Lakkundi for uncovering archaeological treasures. Siddalingaswamiji of the Tontadarya Math, who had received an award for spreading communal harmony, was felicitated on the occasion. The Minister of State for Kannada and Culture, Ms. Rani Satish, released a souvenir. The district in-charge Minister, H.K.Patil, welcomed the gathering.
