Cong. candidates for Bidar ZP posts to be named today

By Our Staff Correspondent

BIDAR March 3. Even though only a short time is left for the elections to the posts of President and Vice-President of Bidar Zilla Panchayat, there is very little political activity. The election for the second 20-month term of President and Vice-President is scheduled for March 5.

It is learnt that this is mainly because the prominent leaders of the Congress, Bheemanna Khandre, Basavaraj Patil Humnabad, Gurupadappa Nagamarpally, and Bandeppa Kashampur are evincing little interest in the election.

While the post of President is reserved for General (woman), that of the vice-president is earmarked for the ST candidate.

It is certain that the two posts will go to women candidates this time as only Kamalabai Shivaji, representing the Dubulgundi in Humnabad is the ST candidate left in the race. The other two ST candidates, Vijaykumar Kashampur and Rajasekhar Metre, have already become presidents and hence are unlikely to contest for the Vice-President's post.

In the first 20-month term, which ended on Sunday, the two posts were reserved for the ST and the General categories. While Vijaykumar Kashampur became the President, Prabhu Anneppa became the Vice-President.

After Mr. Kashampur was removed from the post, following a revolt by his own party members, Mr. Metre was made the President. The latter had been in office only for six months. Similarly, Ms. Vaijanath replaced Prabhu Anneppa as the Vice-President. In the 26-member House, the Congress has 24 members.

It is learnt that for the post of President, Chaya Bai Patil, Anuradha Tabbali, Shakuntala Parvathimath, and Ms. Vaijanath, are in the race. Among these candidates, Ms. Parvathimath is the senior-most having been the zilla panchayat member from 1987 to 1992.

It is learnt from party sources that a meeting will be held at the party office here on Monday to finalise the names of candidates for the two posts.

The Bidar DCC President, Basavaraj Bulla, will preside over the meeting. An observer from the KPCC is also expected to attend the meeting.

The KPCC members and party candidates in the 1999 elections have also been invited for the meeting.
