PTV transmission banned in Gujarat

AHMEDABAD MARCH 3. The Gujarat Government has banned the telecast of Pakistan TV channel in the State since Friday for allegedly vitiating the already surcharged atmosphere.

An official spokesman said here that the decision was taken in view of the prevailing circumstances, which demanded restraint in news reporting, so that communal harmony and peace could be restored at the earliest.

Yesterday, the Chief Minister, Narendra Modi, had warned that the Government could use its ``discretionary'' powers to ban those TV news channels, which carried ``exaggerated'' reports and disseminated inaccurate and inflammatory information.

Schools, colleges to close

The Gujarat Education Board (GEB) has decided to keep all the educational institutions in Ahmedabad, Surat, Vadodara, Rajkot and Bhavnagar cities closed till tomorrow.

Earlier, the GEB had announced the closure of all institutions till March 2.

However, the decision to extend the closure by one more day was taken in the wake of fresh incidents of violence in the State. — UNI
