Speaking to reporters later, Mr. Khurana said the committee would recommend compensation to those who had been rendered homeless as a result of the massive build-up. Disclosing that 70,100 acres of land had been affected due to the build-up in Jammu and Kashmir, he said 25,000 acres were mined and the rest was being used for other activities. This had led to migration from these areas and "we are recommending 50 per cent compensation to farmers.'' For the family of those who had been killed by a landmine, the committee would recommend Rs. one lakh, and for the injured or the handicapped, Rs. 50,000. For a member of each migrant family, it would recommend a job in the Army. And those who were landless but earning their livelihood by working in the agricultural lands would be recommended Rs. 280 a month.
