CHENNAI, MARCH 4. It was an unimpressive start for the National second division football league cluster III competition as Kerala State Electricity Board and State Bank of Hyderabad played a goalless draw at the Nehru Stadium here on Monday. It was one of those encounters that keep away the crowd and the show did not come up to expectations. State Bank even missed a spot kick and allowed the rival to take the initiative in the final minutes. KSEB, which started briskly and then became defensive, tried to hustle the rival, but missed a couple of chances. State Bank was organising its attack better and almost got a goal in about 10 minutes when Khaja Moiuddin and Zulfikar Alam gave a momentum to the attack and that resulted an exciting melee. They had the chances to take pot shots at the empty goal. But the KSEB's defenders Mujeeb and Joseph brought off goalline saves. Goalkeeper Shyam had slipped and was stranded. It was the bank squad which was pressing hard and when Khaja moved in from 30 yards unchallenged to score, goalkeeper Shyam brought him down inside the box. Referee Mrinangshu Bhattacharya awarded a spot kick. Mani Bhushan's shot was saved by the goalkeeper. However, KSEB played better in the second half in which Jaseer squandered a good chance as his feeble kick hit the face of the onrushing goalkeeper Gopaiah and bounced away. The Kerala side continued to press hard, but Robinson's cross was headed away by Sunil Kumar. Then Rajesh shot over from close. And Jaseer's nice volley was stopped by Gopaiah. Mrs. Latika Saran, DGP, inaugurated the competition.
