Paradip enters semifinals

PARADIP, MARCH 4. Host Paradip for the first time entered the semifinal of the all-India Major Ports football championship while holder Kolkota was knocked out, in the 26th edition of the tournament here on Monday.

Paradip made the last four after drawing 1-1 with Mormugao in its final pool B group match. Mormugao topped this pool with three wins and a draw ahead of Paradip (two wins and two draws).

Cochin shocked Kolkota 2-0 and topped pool A with three wins and a draw. Mumbai with two wins and two draws was runner-up. It rounded off its league engagements with a big 6-0 win over Visakhapatnam.

J. Sebastian and Vinay scored in the fourth and 33rd minutes of the second half in Cochin's upset win over Kolkota. The last year's winner prevailed over Chennai 1-0 but its loss to Cochin, put it out of contention.

Sanjit Jena scored the equaliser for Paradip in the 33rd minute of second half after J. Fernandez put Mormugao ahead in the 34th minute.

Dinesh Kumar scored the tournament's second hat-trick in Tuticorin's 7-0 drubbing of lowly Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT) in pool B. J. Rock scored in the second and 15th minutes and M. Arokia Raj netted one in the fifth minute. Dinesh's three goals came in the 28th, 35th and 63rd minutes. J. Rock completed the margin in the 67th minute.

In Mumbai's one-sided win, Achuta Rao (seventh and 50th) scored two goals, while Sijjin Sankaran (23rd), Eugene Miranda (46th), Umesh Shetty (51st) and Simon Fernandez (55th) netted one each.

Mormugao earlier drubbed JNPT 5-0. It led by a Collin Fernandez (20th) goal in the first half. Joaquim Fernandez (18th), Sk. N. Aboo (19th), Camilo (23rd) and Cosmo De Olivera (28th) scored in the second half.

Paradip faces Cochin and Mormugao takes on Mumbai in Tuesday's semifinals.
