Opinion - Letters to the Editor

Time to resign

Sir, — First, the Godhra incident and then the retaliatory acts — the senseless and barbaric attacks on innocent human beings — a dark spot that should make us all hang our heads in shame. The supreme responsibility for this explosion of communal violence rests with the BJP. It's policy of `toeing the line' on Ayodhya and pandering to extremist groups has set the stage for this explosion. The BJP has always exploited communal tensions for political gain, and the loser is always India.

But I ask this question: once the VHP started a final drive to construct the Ram mandir and set the March 15 final deadline to feeble and barely audible resistance from the Central Government, could there really have been any doubt in the minds of anyone that this issue was waiting to explode into communal clashes?

The road ahead looks troublesome. After all, Mahatma Gandhi was adept at using fasting and personal pleas to stop communal tensions; the BJP is adept at using political plundering and manipulations to start communal tensions.

We must draw the line: the BJP must no longer be allowed to desperately cling to power at the expense of our secular Indian democracy.

Tariq B. Fancy,
Massachusetts, U.S.
