NEW DELHI, MARCH 9. After a long wait, Railways finally had its moment of glory when it won its maiden Ranji Trophy at the Karnail Singh Stadium here on Saturday.

The victory, achieved with more than a day to spare in the five-day final, also enabled the Railways to avenge its loss against Baroda in last year's title match. Apart from the triumph, by 277 runs, the manner in which it was achieved will also be cherished by the Railway players for a long time to come.

There was no fight from Baroda on the fourth day as Railways delivered the knock-out punch a quarter an hour after lunch. Facing a target of 391 in two days, the defending champion was bowled out for 113.

``It is a great feeling. We are pleased that our hard work has finally paid off,'' said Railway coach Vinod Sharma.

Railways, which thrives on team effort, showed it strength with a splendid performance on this day. The new ball pair of Harvinder Singh and Zakir Hussain pushed Baroda on the defensive in the first 15 minutes by dismissing openers Nayan Mongia and Connor Williams. From there on, Baroda was never in contention and was bowled out in 165 minutes.

After Mongia, who opened in place of an indisposed Satyajit Parab, was caught behind off Harvinder in the first over, Zakir induced an edge from left-hander Williams. Zakir added two more wickets in his eight-over spell as he scalped Jacob Martin and Tushar Arothe.

Zakir was rewarded for pitching the ball up when he enticed Williams and Arothe into loose strokes. Both the batsmen played away from the body and paid for it. Martin was trapped leg before by Zakir

Baroda lost four wickets in a span of 70 minutes. Barring Atul Bedade (59, 115 minutes), whose aggressive innings included 12 boundaries, no one could cope with the pressure of chasing a challenging total.

The Railway spinners Murali Kartik and Kulamani Parida, who shared six wickets between them, complemented the medium-pacers perfectly. For Kartik, who ended the match with an eight-wicket haul, it proved to be a memorable outing. He had come good with the bat, too, the previous day at a crucial juncture.

Kartik's exceptional performance in the final continued as he picked up the wickets of Satyajit Parab and Yusuf Pathan in his first over. In all, Kartik took 37 wickets in eight matches this season.

Such a humilitating defeat for Baroda resulted from the way its top order bastmen batted. For a side, which had in- form batsmen in Martin and Williams, it was a big disappointment to go down in such a fashion.

Only Bedade showed some resistance as he picked three fours in one over on two occasions. The bowlers to suffer were Zakir and Parida. Bedade scored his half-century off 51 balls, and it included 11 boundaries.

Bedade's effort came to an end when he erred in reading the length of Parida's delivery. The attempted pull shot was caught by Raja Ali at mid-wicket. After Bedade departed at 92, Baroda lost the remaining five wickets for only 21 runs.
