Opinion - Letters to the Editor

Judicial restraint

Sir, — This has reference to your Editorial `The conviction of Arundhati Roy' (March 7). The judges have exhibited a high degree of restraint while dealing with the case.

They were prepared to accept fair and healthy criticism of the judicial system if it was made in good faith and public interest. Though public interest is involved in this litigation, Arundhati Roy exceeded all limits.

Freedom of expression is one of the fundamental rights guaranteed to every citizen under the Constitution. But this right does not confer any power on the individual, whatever be his position in society, to make derogatory remarks on any responsible official or institution.

The affidavit given by Ms. Roy amounts to gross misuse of this fundamental right.

B.R. Pantulu,
Secunderabad, A.P.
