Gender bias

Sir, — I am scandalised by the sentence handed down to Arundhati Roy for committing contempt. Your Editorial `The conviction of Arundhati Roy' is a classic essay on the subject of contempt.

The robed luminaries occupying the Bench have shown that they are human and subject to emotion.

The Bench has committed a constitutional faux pas in stating that the respondent is a `woman.' Bias based on gender is barred.

R. Seshadri,
Chennai
