LINARES, MARCH 10. Former world chess champion Viswanathan Anand made a quick 28-move draw against FIDE World champion, Ruslan Ponomariov in the fourteenth round to finish his outing with a fifty per cent score in the 19th City of Linares chess tournament here on Sunday. Anand ended on six points from 12 games. The draw assured Kasparov the title for the eighth time in his career and stamped his class on the category 20 tournament for the fourth time in a row. He won it first time in 1990 and followed that up in 1992, 1993, 1997, 1999, 2000 (shared), 2001 and now in 2002. He will get a big portion of the four million pesetas (Rs.10 lakhs) prize fund. Kasparov's appearance fee is about $ 75,000 but this is approximation and the actual figure is never disclosed. About Sunday's game, which ended in 34 minutes, Anand said ``today, my entire game was from my computer.'' About the performance in the tournament, Ubilava said ``you have to take this as mild recovery from what happened in Moscow.'' In Sunday's game, Anand was black and played the Ruy Lopez, Marshall attack. Ruslan Ponomariov, who played white, and also allowed the Marshall attack in an earlier game against Adams could not stop Anand from making a draw by perpetual checks. Meanwhile on Saturday, World No. 1 Garry Kasparov of Russia scored an attacking victory over the World champion Ruslan Ponomariov to move closer towards his eighth title. Kasparov, 38, moved to an unbeatable seven points from 11 games. Kasparov was waiting for this game and won in 38 moves when the 18-year old Ponomariov started with a poor opening and never got his king to safety or developed his king rook. Kasparov was about to win black's queen or checkmate when resignation came in the form of a handshake. Anand faced an improvement from Michael Adams of England before deciding to take a quick draw and crawl up to 5.5 points from eleven games on Saturday. Having lost the black game, Anand was expected to seek revenge. They played the Petroff's defence opening with Anand repeating the idea of Kasparov with the white pieces. On move 25, Adams improved over his own play against Kasparov from the tournament and Anand took time for his 26th move and proposed a draw. It was a disappointing 66-minute result with just one new move from each of the players. In the see-saw encounter of round 13, Shirov came close to become the first player to win a game with the black pieces but failed in time pressure and allowed Vallejo win his first game of the tournament. Vallejo ended his event on a winning note to finish on 5/12. The results (round 13): Viswanathan Anand (Ind) 5.5/11 drew with Michael Adams (Eng) 5/11, Garry Kasparov (Rus) 7/11 bt Ruslan Ponomariov (Ukr) 6/11, Francisco Vallejo (Esp) 5/12 bt Alexei Shirov (Esp) 5/11, Vassily Ivanchuk (Ukr) 5.5/11 - bye.
