Skeet shooters still way below mark
By Kirti Patil

MEERUT, MARCH 10. The basis of selection do not necessarily merits the talented. If the accomplishments were the rationale behind representing the country, then Indian skeet shooters should improve their worth.

At any rate, the skeet marksmen, traditionally, have always posted erratic scores as compared to their trap and double trap counterparts. In the international competitions, including World Cups, skeet shooters have finished way down the ladder.

Still, they keep getting selected to represent India. As two World Cups, in Sydney and Shanghai, are on the horizon, the National Rifle Association of India (NRAI) has picked up a team of 11 shotgun shooters, apart from 20 in rifle and pistol section.

The 31-member team will take part in the two World Cups, pending clearance from the Government. The Sydney World Cup is scheduled to be held from April 9 to 19 and the Shanghai event from April 21 to 29 - both carrying Olympic quota places.

To prepare the Indian team for the upcoming events, a 25-day preparatory camp will be held at the Dr. Karni Singh Shooting Range in Tughlakabad. While pistol and rifle shooters will practice under national coach Prof. Sunny Thomas, Italian expert Marcelo Dradi has already arrived to oversee the preparations of the trap shooters.

Basically a trap coach, but Dradi has always taken interest in double trap marksman Major R.V.S. Rathore, who on Saturday retained his National title after a tie-shoot with Gaurav Sondhi. Dradi's presence will help Rathore, Sondhi and the bronze medal winner Morad Ali Khan, all part of the double trap squad.

The kind of performance these three gave at the Meerut District Rifle Association Range here, one can expect good scores from them in Sydney and Shanghai. The Meerut range, which operates on obsolete clay pigeon machines, was slow for the shooters, who are accustomed to better ranges like in Delhi. The vintage machines here were those brought in 1982 for the ninth Asiad in Delhi.

The machines were replaced in 1995 for the Commonwealth championships, and were left abandoned in Tughlakabad, before being loaned to the range here.

As regards to skeet, their selection defies performance. A team of four, Harinder Singh Bedi, Amardeep Singh Rai, Rahoul Rai and Naveen Jindal, have been included. Arti Singh Rao is the only woman skeet shooter in the squad. Except her better score in Lonato World Cup last year, she has been inconsistent.

The two-day National skeet championship gets underway here on Monday. Regardless of the performance here, as the things stand, the five are expected to make it to Sydney and Shanghai.
