Letters to the Editor
Sir, G.M.C. Balayogi, as the Lok Sabha Speaker, was a compromise choice in a free-for-all market for Cabinet posts. He turned out to be one of the best Speakers. Every minute Balayogi spent in the House was full of walkouts and acrimonious exchanges, sometimes in Billingsgate language, but he conducted the proceedings ably, though not without hiccups. There is a move to unveil Balayogi's statue in Hyderabad. Andhra Pradesh should be proud of its great son but statues spell trouble in our country. They cease to be objects of reverence and soon turn into bones of contention. If the country wants to honour Balayogi, let our Members of Parliament pledge that there will be no more unruly behaviour in the House even in the face of the gravest of provocations.
V.R. Lakshminarayanan,
